Severstal launches new casting complex at Its own mechanical engineering centre
Severstal has completed a major investment project to modernise the shaped casting section of the SSM-Tyazhmash mechanical engineering centre at the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant (CherMK, the principal asset of Severstal). The modernisation will increase steel casting output by 40% per year to supply key production units of CherMK and the company's resource assets with blanks for the manufacture of components and assemblies.
The company commenced implementation of the investment project, valued at 1.7 billion roubles, in 2023. Within the scope of the project, a second electric arc furnace (EAF-7) with a capacity of 7 tonnes was constructed, along with a combined gas treatment system for the extraction and purification of gases, a heat treatment furnace with a quenching tank, a shot blast unit, and a vacuum film moulding line. Compressor and electrical equipment were also modernised, and a modern automated process control system was implemented. The majority of the principal equipment for the complex was manufactured and supplied by domestic enterprises.
The preparation of working documentation and project supervision were carried out by specialists of VNIIMETMASH (part of Severstal). Installation and commissioning works involved Severstal's own divisions, as well as contractors from Cherepovets and the Vologda Region.
Foundry technologies will be presented at the Metallurgy/Litmash.Russia'2026 exhibition (Moscow, Timiryazev Centre, May 26–28).
